Back in the dark days of the mid-19th century, before the bartender’s armory of tools had been invented and perfected, measuring out the ingredients to create a mixed drink was a messy and haphazard process. In most cases, bartenders would simply use a sherry or wine glass to roughly recreate a recipe. The double-sided jigger, patented in 1893, changed all that.
First employed during the Gilded Age, the cocktail jigger, or bar jigger, is an hourglass-shaped tool that enables bartenders to accurately measure the small quantities of liquid needed to mix a wide variety of drinks. The effect of the jigger’s invention was revolutionary. Suddenly a cocktail recipe could be relayed around the world and recreated according to precise measurements, delivering a uniform, standardized flavor. The art of mixing was born.
